Sunnyvale School District has been awarded the esteemed Golden Bell Award by the California School Boards Association (CSBA). The Association selects recipients based on outstanding achievement and innovation in public education. The Sunnyvale School District was recognized for its Parent Engagement Program: Empowering Families and Bridging the Gap for Underserved Families.
The Parent Engagement Program focuses on building partnerships with families of Hispanic and Latino descent, English learners, students with disabilities, and Black and African American households. Through culturally responsive workshops, multilingual communication, and direct support, the program has empowered parents to advocate for their children, access critical resources, and build trust with educators. Over the past two years, parent participation in school events and site councils increased by more than 30% at participating schools.
“We know the importance of family engagement in children’s learning success, so we work closely with our families, listening to them and using their input to inform much of our work,” said Dr. Gudiel Crosthwaite, Superintendent. “I am grateful for this recognition by the California School Boards Association (CSBA). I am so proud of the work being done by our families, faculty, and community, to take down learning barriers and ensure all our children have the opportunity to thrive.”
“This recognition from the CSBA affirms the profound impact of our shared vision: a belief that partnering with our families is not just beneficial, but absolutely critical to ensuring every student's success,” said Board President Bridget Watson. “Our families are our most vital allies, and this award is a testament to the powerful outcomes we can achieve together when we intentionally empower them to be active participants in their children’s educational journey.”
